The beauty and durability of natural wood shutters
When you think of shutters, chances are that the wood variety is what immediately springs to mind. Certainly, there are vinyl composite shutters, which can be an attractive and effective choice for certain rooms in a home. But there’s also nothing like the classics!
We wanted to talk more about handcrafted hardwood shutters and the reasons you might consider them. That said, here’s an overview of this timeless style of window covering.
The secret of durable shutters
The first thing to talk about is basswood. That is the top species we use to craft our shutters. Other common woods used in shutters include poplar, MDF and HDF.
We avoid those other three, though, partially due to quality concerns. Basswood is our go-to because its indistinct grain pattern and uniform texture lend itself well to any kind of stain or paint.
In addition, the non-porous close grains in basswood resist moisture and warping better than open wood grains, meaning more pronounced durability for the shutters. It also has a greater strength-to-weight ratio than any other shutter material. even though it’s officially classified as a “lightweight” wood.
Some reasons why you may want wood shutters
Among the best attributes of hardwood shutters are these:
Easy to clean: Because of hardwood’s properties, these shutters don’t attract as much dust to the louvers, which can be an issue with synthetic options.
Diversity in colors: These shutters are in a wide variety of colors to match your decor, or you can customize the color you need to match the rooms in your home.
No cords: If safety is a concern, shutters are a great option, especially for homes with children or pets.
Energy use: With an insulating design, they can help lower energy bills and keep your home at a comfortable temperature, no matter the season.
