When to replace your window treatments

Unsure about when to replace your window treatments? Sometimes window treatments are the last thing we think about. There’s so much to consider in-home design: furniture, carpeting and paint colors. This sometimes means we’ve kept the same blinds or curtains for years.

Window treatments are an essential aspect of interior design. They add a finishing touch and elegance to your space and can also act as money saving insulators.

So, how do you know when it’s time to change or when to stick it out? Here are some common issues and how to know when it is time to change things up and replace your window treatments:

1. Warped or discolored blinds

Wooden blinds will eventually warp and even yellow over time when exposed to the daily sun. When warping occurs, it will usually make them more difficult to open and close. Other blind materials can also warp, discolor or break. Even just a few funky slats can really take away from your blinds’ look (and function).

If any of these apply to you, it’s time to make a swap. You can easily replace them with new wood blinds, if you choose, or opt for vinyl composite blinds. These are more resistant and tend to last longer. These are especially good choices for humid areas of the house, like bathrooms and kitchens.

2. Frayed or knotted cords

Take a quick look at your blind cords. If there’s any fraying, it’s time for a change. When cords are damaged, it can be a huge hazard to children, pets and can cause your blinds to malfunction.

For an upgraded and safer look, opt for cordless shades. These shades open and close by a gentle push or pull. They’re much safer for your family and mean no more frayed, tangled or pesky cords. You’ll be surprised how easy they are to use and how elegant they’ll make your space. There are even smart versions that allow you to open and close your blinds with your phone!

3. Worn fabric

If you have fabric curtains, you may, at some point, experience fabric fraying. This is a key sign that your curtains are too old or made of cheap material. Both are aseptically unpleasing and can also mean your curtains aren’t insolating your property as well as they could.

Your blinds and shades can also fray, too! This could also be a symptom of age, but could also mean your blinds are the wrong size for your window and are scraping along the window sill when you raise and lower them.

There are tons of fabric options for curtains, blinds and shades. It’s easy to upgrade to a new, quality window treatment that fits within your budget (so there’s no good excuse for fraying!) High-quality window treatments will last longer and be more energy-efficient too.

4. Window drafts

You may think that it’s inevitable for windows to leak in some outside air, but a quality window treatments will efficiently insulate your window. So, if you’re feeling a draft near your windows, it’s time for an upgrade.
